Intruder sprays man with tear gas

A 67-year-old man has been sprayed with tear gas after challenging an intruder in his home in East Renfrewshire.

The man arrived at his home in The Grove, Giffnock, at about 12:30, to find his front door had been forced open.

When he went inside he was met by a man ransacking the hallway.

As he tried to challenge the man he was assaulted and sprayed with a CS gas-type spray. Police said the suspect then fled from the property.

The suspect is described as a white man, aged about 40, 5ft 11in, with a round face and a red flushed complexion.

He is well built and clean shaven and at the time of the incident he was wearing what is described as a "pork-pie" style hat and dark clothing.

The householder received treatment from paramedics at the scene but did not go to hospital.
