'Police advice' robber David Johnstone sentenced

A robber who told newsagent staff that they could call police after he stole more than £300 from a till has been jailed for three years and four months.

David Johnstone admitted assault and robbery over the raid at RS McColl's in Glasgow's Carntyne area last December.

The High Court in Glasgow heard he told staff: "I am not going to hurt you. I am sorry. You can phone the polis now."

When police later caught the 49-year-old he had a knife in the waistband of his trousers.
