Police are treating the death of an 87-year-old woman who was found in her South Lanarkshire home as suspicious.

The body of Kathleen Milward was found in Brodie Place, Stonehouse, near Larkhall, at about 20:30 on 3 January.

A "major investigation" is under way as officers try to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police have asked anyone who was in the Brodie Place area of Stonehouse on 3 January, and who saw or heard anything suspicious, to come forward.

Extensive inquiries

Det Sup Robbie Allan, who is leading the investigation, said: "Officers have been carrying out detailed and extensive inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Kathleen's death.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the Brodie Place area of Stonehouse on Wednesday 3 January 2012 and may have seen or heard something suspicious to come forward and speak to officers as soon as possible

"In particular I would also urge anyone who was in the area to think back in case they can remember seeing anyone hanging around who appeared out of place to speak to officers."

Det Sup Allan said people in Stonehouse, especially elderly residents, should be reassured that "there are additional high visibility patrols in the area".
