William Muir jailed over Lugar farmhouse robbery bid

A man who attempted to rob an 86-year-old woman at an East Ayrshire farmhouse has been jailed for four years.

William Muir threatened Jean Currans at her home in Muirkirk Road, Lugar, in May last year.

The 42-year-old, who was on bail at the time of the offence, was convicted of attempted robbery following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

Judge Lord Matthews ordered Muir to be supervised for a further two years on his release from prison.

'Nasty offence'

It emerged after the trial that Muir has a lengthy criminal record - including theft and drug convictions.

Jailing him, Lord Matthews said: "You have been found guilty of a nasty offence.

"This was an attempted robbery on an elderly woman in her own property which was an isolated farmhouse.

"An extended sentence will be imposed to protect the public from further harm from you."
