Probe into £10,000 raid at Hawthorn scrap dealers in Irvine

Police are hunting two men who robbed a scrap metal dealers in North Ayrshire of just over £10,000.

The men forced their way into Hawthorn Scrap Metal Dealers, Sloan Avenue, Irvine, at about 12:50 on Monday.

They threatened an office worker with a knife before making off with the cash. He was not injured during the raid.

The men made off in a blue Vauxhall Astra car which was later found burned out at the town's Riverside Business Park, near Steadman Place.

The two suspects were described as white, Scottish, and both were wearing balaclavas and dark clothing.

Det Insp Colin Drummond, from Strathclyde Police, said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the Sloan Avenue or Steadman Place areas of Irvine on Monday and who saw anyone hanging around this area or was aware of a blue Vauxhall Astra car there to contact Saltcoats police office.

"I would also ask if anyone with any information on the men involved in this robbery to contact us."
