Lorry driver dies after being at side of M74

A 47-year-old lorry driver has died after being struck by a passing tanker as he stood at the side of the M74 in South Lanarkshire.

The man was adjusting the straps on his lorry on the hard shoulder of the southbound carriageway, near Hamilton, at about 07:00 when he was hit.

He was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General but died a short time later.

The 43-year-old driver of the tanker was not injured. Police appealed for witnesses.

The carriageway between junctions 6 and 7 was closed for almost five hours after the accident.

Sgt Alex Andrews said: "The driver had just got out of his cab to tend to straps on the lorry that had become loose when he was hit by the tanker.

"I am keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, especially the occupants of a white van who may hold vital information, and would ask that any information be passed to road policing dept at Govan on 0141 532 6400."
