Homes evacuated after Ashgill school fire

Several homes were evacuated after a fire broke out in a derelict school building.

Firefighters were called to the old Dalserf Primary School in Ashgill, South Lanarkshire, at 02:10.

Nearby residents were told to leave their homes because of the risk posed by heavy smoke and burning embers.

The blaze was quickly brought under control, and they were allowed to return to their homes a short time later.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue service said no one was hurt, and an investigation was underway into the cause of the blaze.
