Police divers searching for a 16-year-old boy who went missing while fishing at a quarry in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, have recovered his body.

Martyn McPhail, from Airdrie, was reported missing at Springbank Quarry, Stepends Road, at 18:40 on Tuesday.

A surface search by Strathclyde Police helicopter and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue failed to trace him.

Strathclyde Police said that a body recovered at lunchtime on Wednesday was that of the missing teenager.

Martyn is understood to have gone fishing at the quarry on Tuesday with two friends.

It is thought he failed to surface after going for a swim.

Divers arrived at the scene at 11:45 on Wednesday after a search of the surface the night before failed to trace the teenager.

Officers confirmed that a body was recovered at about 12:40.

It is understood that a formal identification will take place later. A post mortem examination will also be held to establish the cause of death.

Police said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
