Police have released the name of a 79-year-old man who died after being hit by a car in South Lanarkshire.

Joe Leitch, from Bothwell, was struck by a black Ford Kuga as he crossed Main Street, Uddingston, near Gardenside Avenue, at about 17:25 on Monday.

The retired college lecturer was taken to Monklands Hospital, Airdrie, where he died. The car driver was uninjured.

The road was closed for five hours following the incident. Strathclyde Police have appealed for witnesses.

A statement from Mr Leitch's family described him as "a real character".

"He had a great sense of humour and his stories of growing up in Maryhill, and of his years of national service, in industry and in education, would keep his family and friends laughing for hours.

"He leaves behind three daughters, seven grandchildren and many friends all of whom love him and will miss him greatly."
