Emergency services were called to the scene, near the Shawhead Flyover, between Bellshill and Coatbridge, at about 09:45 on Wednesday.

Fire crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to rescue the driver, who was taken to Monklands Hospital suffering from suspected pelvic injuries.

The eastbound carriageway is closed with traffic subject to long delays.

A diversion is in place via the A725 Whifflet Street, B753 Calder Street, Sikeside Street, Paddock Street and Carnbroe Road, before returning to the A8 just before Eurocentral.
