Rutherglen stabbing treated as 'attempted murder'

Police are treating an attack in which a 24-year-old man was stabbed in South Lanarkshire as attempted murder.

The victim was walking with two friends in Shieldaig Drive, near Barrisdale Way, Rutherglen, when a man ran up and stabbed him at 19:40 on Wednesday.

His condition is critical but stable at Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary.

The suspect is described as between 20 to 30 years old, about 6ft tall, and of slim build. At the time of the attack he was wearing a grey hooded top.

The victim's two friends ran off after the stabbing and were unharmed.

'Unprovoked attack'

Det Ch Insp Pat Campbell, of Strathclyde Police, said: "This appears to be a totally unprovoked attack on this young man as he was out with his friends.

"Police are currently carrying out enquiries in the local area in an effort to gather more information on this attack.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed this incident, or who may have information that may assist police enquiries to come forward to police as a matter of urgency."
