A woman has died in a house fire in Glasgow.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue were called to the scene in Sumburgh Street in Riddrie at about 06:10.

Crews from Easterhouse and Calton were faced with a well-developed fire in a two-storey house and found one casualty.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "The blaze was extinguished and the body of a woman was found within the property."

In a statement, the fire service said: "Sadly, the individual was pronounced dead by ambulance staff at the scene."

A joint investigation is being carried out by the fire and police services. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

"The crews were faced with a well-developed kitchen fire and the crews worked tirelessly in difficult conditions to find the individual and prevent the spread of fire to other parts of the house," the fire service statement added.

"The fire was quickly contained and is now extinguished. However, crews will be on the scene for a considerable time."
