Bookmakers robber John James Hamilton jailed for five years

A man who carried out an armed robbery at a bookmakers in the north of Glasgow has been jailed for five years.

John James Hamilton brandished a gun at staff and stole £335 from the Ladbrokes shop in Kilfinan Street, Milton, in December 2011.

The 28-year-old, from the Possilpark area, was tracked down by police after the raid was captured on CCTV.

The first offender was convicted following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow in January.

Passing sentence at the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lord Bracadale told Hamilton that a custodial sentence was the only disposal available to him.

Lord Bracadale added: "People who work in shops are particularly vulnerable to robberies and these crimes can often end with disastrous consequences.

"Those who carry out robberies on shops can expect lengthy prison sentences."
