The death of a 49-year-old woman in Inverclyde is being treated as "unexplained", police have said.

Susan Monkhouse's body was found in her flat in South Street, Greenock, at about 17:40 on Wednesday.

Police said a post-mortem examination had taken place and further inquiries are being carried out into her death.

Det Insp David Wagstaff appealed for anyone who saw Ms Monkhouse before she died, or anyone acting suspiciously nearby, to come forward.

'Last movements'

He said: "Extensive police inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding this woman's death, and police are currently studying CCTV footage and carrying out house-to-house inquiries to gather further information that may move this investigation forward.

"Susan Monkhouse was last seen at 21:30 hours on Monday when she was dropped off at her home after a night out in Greenock.

"I would urge anyone who saw Susan between Monday night, when she returned home, and late Wednesday afternoon, to come forward as a matter of urgency as this will help detectives piece together her last movements."

DI Wagstaff added: "I would also ask anyone who lives in South Street, or who regularly visits there to think back and come forward to police if they have witnessed anything out of the ordinary, or anyone acting suspiciously between Monday night and 18:00 hours on Wednesday."
