Man's skull fractured in Lanark street attack

A man is being treated in hospital for a fractured skull after being seriously assaulted in a seemingly unprovoked attack in South Lanarkshire.

The 25-year-old was walking with a female friend when he was set upon by another man in High Street, Lanark, shortly after midnight on Friday.

He is being treated at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital, where his condition is said to be very serious.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

The suspect was described as being in his mid 20s and about 5ft 10in tall.

'Correct thing'

He is of slim build, has dark hair and was wearing casual clothing.

Police are carrying out door-to-door inquiries and gathering CCTV images.

Det Sgt James Quinn, of Police Scotland, said: "This appears to be an unprovoked attack which has left a man seriously ill in hospital.

"I would appeal directly to the suspect to do the correct thing and come to police before the police come for you.

"I am also appealing to local residents who may have seen or heard something to get in touch."
