New £18m leisure centre for Queen's Quay in Clydebank

Funding has been approved for a major new leisure centre in Clydebank.

West Dunbartonshire Council has agreed to commit £18m for the venue at Queen's Quay overlooking the River Clyde.

When built, it will have a teaching and competition pool, fitness suite, sports hall, combat room and dance studio.

The 17-month construction phase could begin in April next year. The centre could be completed before Christmas 2015, although this could stretch to March 2016.

The council was planning to meet the cost of the development through the sale of the existing Play Drome facility in Clydebank to Tesco.

With negotiations still ongoing, the authority has voted to approve the build cost from existing funds.
