Linwood murder probe after two men attacked

A murder inquiry has been launched after the death of a 31-year-old man who was found injured in a street in Renfrewshire in the early hours.

Police said the two men were subjected to a "terrible and vicious attack" on Bridge Street in Linwood at 00:50.

Craig McSporran, who lived on Bridge Street, and his 32-year-old friend were taken to hospital in Paisley.

Mr McSporran died a short time later. His friend is still in a serious condition in hospital.

A post-mortem examination into Mr McSporran's death will take place later.

Police said they were treating his death as murder.

Detectives are carrying out door-to-door inquiries and are reviewing CCTV.

Det Ch Insp Colin Carey, from Police Scotland Major Investigation Team, said: "The two men were subjected to a terrible and vicious attack by their assailants - who at this time we do not have a description of.

"We know that the two men were both in a local bar in Bridge Street, Linwood, earlier in the evening and left around 00:30 making their way along Bridge Street towards Bridge of Weir Road and Fullwood Avenue.

"I am appealing for anyone who was in the area around midnight; who saw the two men, one of whom was wearing a very distinctive orange t-shirt, orange shorts and flip-flops, to come forward and speak to officers.

"I am also appealing for anyone who may have heard an altercation in the area or who has any information about what happened to these two men to contact me as soon as possible."
