Woman, 18, raped on night out in Irvine, North Ayrshire

An investigation is underway after an 18-year-old woman was raped in Irvine, North Ayrshire, on Saturday.

The woman was with a man she met earlier in a pub, when she was led away from the main road at Townhead, near the Gala Bingo, at 01:30 on Saturday.

Police Scotland said she was then subjected to a serious sexual assault.

Detectives are reviewing local CCTV footage and carrying out door-to-door enquiries. They have appealed for information about the incident.

'Traumatic experience'

Det Insp Martyn Hopkins, of Police Scotland, said: "This was a particularly traumatic experience for the young woman concerned, who had been enjoying a night out in the local area before she was attacked.

"I would like to reassure the local community that we are continuing extensive enquiries into this incident.

"We know that the victim had been in a local pub prior to the incident, where she is believed to have met the suspect.

"I'd like to appeal to anyone who had been nearby in any of the local public houses earlier in the evening to come forward.

"I'd particularly like to trace a man, who was wearing a white long sleeved t-shirt, as he may have information which could assist with our enquiries."
