Woman dies after being hit by van in Kirkintilloch

An elderly pedestrian has died after being knocked down by a van.

The woman was walking in Merkland Drive, Kirkintilloch, near to a bus turning circle when she was struck by a silver Ford Transit at about 06:40 on Tuesday.

She was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary but died in hospital. The van was being driven by 48-year-old man.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident which happened near the entrance to a nature reserve.

Sgt Joe McGuckien said: "The area was quiet at the time of the incident but we believe there may have been a few vehicles passing this location.

"The nearby nature reserve is also very popular with local dog walkers and I'd like to speak to any passing motorists or local dog walkers who may have witnessed this incident."
