George Milne jailed for debilitating attack on Mark Docherty

A man has been jailed for five-and-a-half years for carrying out a brutal attack in North Lanarkshire which left his victim unable to speak or walk.

George Milne, 36, was convicted of assaulting 43-year-old Mark Docherty at the home of another man in Bellshill on 29 August last year.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Mr Docherty now communicates by blinking and pointing.

Milne claimed that he had only punched his victim once.

Jailing him, temporary judge John Becket QC told Milne: "This incident caused severe brain injury to Mr Docherty which have devastated the quality of his life.

"Seven months after the incident he can't talk and is confined to a hospital bed.

"Medical staff say the best scenario is that he will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair."
