Gary Strachan jailed for John McFarlane bottle attack

A man who carried out an apparently motiveless bottle attack on another man in Glasgow has been jailed for four years.

Gary Strachan, 27, admitted assaulting 35-year-old John McFarlane to the danger of his life in Meadowpark Street, Dennistoun, on 1 December 2013.

The victim was walking home alone after celebrating his birthday when McFarlane repeatedly hit him with the bottle.

Strachan will also be monitored for three years after his release.

Jailing him at the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lord Turnbull told Strachan he was a "significant danger to the public when under the influence of alcohol".

Head injury

Mr McFarlane was set upon as he headed home after celebrating his birthday.

CCTV footage played in court showed Strachan suddenly running across to Mr McFarlane and lashing out with a Buckfast bottle.

Mr McFarlane was rushed to hospital suffering from a life-threatening head injury.

Strachan, also of Dennistoun, handed himself into police on 30 December following a media appeal.

Mr McFarlane has been unable to return to work as a plumber and fears he could be attacked again.

Strachan's defence counsel Dale Hughes said: "He was shocked and embarrassed when he saw the CCTV footage of what he did. He is remorseful."
