Police have revealed that a man who raped a woman in Glasgow city centre at the weekend had been walking with her before the attack.

The 24-year-old victim was with her attacker in Ingram Street, in the Merchant City, at 01:25 on Sunday.

Five minutes later, they entered a basement area in Brunswick Street where the attack took place.

The suspect is white, aged 20-30 years old, about 5ft 10in tall, with a medium build and strawberry blonde hair.

At the time of the attack, he was wearing a dark jumper (possibly blue) with a white shirt, blue jeans with an emblem on the back right-hand side pocket and dark shoes.

Det Insp Craig Willison, of Police Scotland, said: "I would like to assure people that we are determined to trace the perpetrator of this crime.

'Predators' around

"We have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area and are looking at CCTV images to see if they provide us with further detail.

"This area is surrounded by bars and clubs and although it was in the early hours of the morning, I'm sure people would have been out and about. I am appealing to anyone who may have been in the vicinity to get in touch with us."

Det Insp Willison said any information "could prove vital".

He added: "People mustn't feel that they have to avoid going out or enjoying themselves but be aware that there are predators who will seek out people who appear vulnerable.

"We have additional patrols in the area to provide reassurance to local people and anyone with concerns can raise them with these officers."
