Deliberate fire destroys 12 Games portable toilets near Hampden

Police have said a fire that destroyed 12 portable toilets for disabled Commonwealth Games guests at Hampden was deliberate.

The facilities, at Prospecthill Road, in Toryglen, were found ablaze at about 05:00 on Thursday.

The cost of the damage has been estimated at £50,000. Replacements will now be put in place.

Police Scotland described the incident as "sickening" and "mindless" and appealed for information.

Det Con David Hardie, of Police Scotland, said: "The toilets were placed there for disabled guests who were attending the Commonwealth Games at Hampden.

"Alternative arrangements will now have to be put in place. It is sickening that mindless individuals carry out this sort of crime with no regard for the consequences.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and saw anyone at or near the toilets to come forward."

Det Con Hardie added: "I know that the area was relatively busy for that time of morning with people going to the 24 hour ASDA. Also, the fire would have been seen by drivers travelling on Prospecthill Road."
