Four hurt as five cars crash in fog on A8 at Coatbridge

Four people have been injured after five cars collided in fog on the A8 in North Lanarkshire.

Emergency services were called to the eastbound carriageway at Shawhead, near Coatbridge, at about 08:45 on Tuesday.

Two men and a woman were treated at the scene by paramedics before another woman was cut free from her car by fire crews. All four were taken to Monklands General Hospital for treatment.

The accident has now been cleared and traffic is running normally.

'Trapped casualty'

Incident commander Malcolm Ferguson, of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We were working with paramedics throughout this operation and it was determined the safest way to release the trapped casualty was to remove the roof from her car.

"This created space for her to be lifted clear of the vehicle and moved to an ambulance.

"Our colleagues from the police had closed a lane of the eastbound carriageway and were controlling the flow of traffic to ensure the rescue could be carried out safely.

Mr Ferguson added: "All four casualties were taken to Monklands General Hospital for further treatment and of course all the emergency responders involved in this operation will wish them well."
