Police have launched an investigation after an elderly couple were found dead in a house in Millport.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said the bodies were found inside the house, in the West Bay area of the town, at about 11:20 on Monday.

The couple are thought to be retired doctor Arthur Tear and his wife Mary who was thought to have had dementia.

It is understood the police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

A police spokesman said inquiries into the deaths were ongoing and post-mortem examinations would be held in due course.

The couple were also said to have three grown-up children who did not live on the island.

Millport is the only town on the island of Great Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde, off the coast of North Ayrshire.
