A street attack in East Ayrshire that left a man with a serious head injury is being treated as attempted murder.

The victim was assaulted on a footpath, near Onthank Primary and Tourhill Road, Kilmarnock, at about 02:00 on Saturday.

He was approached by another man who hit him with a large weapon.

There is currently no description of the attacker. The victim, 32, made his way home and was treated at Crosshouse Hospital before being taken to Glasgow's Southern General Hospital.

'Frightening experience'

Det Insp Ricky Drummond, of Police Scotland, said: "This was a very frightening experience for the man who sustained a significant head injury in this attack.

"We've yet to speak to the victim at length therefore we have scant information at this time, however, I'd like to speak to any local people or anyone who was nearby who may have seen or heard a disturbance in the area where the attack took place.

"We're continuing door-to-door inquiries and are checking all CCTV that may be available to see if that can assist us."

Det Insp Drummond added: "We have had some information from the public, however, I am confident that there may be some witnesses who have not yet come forward. I'd like to speak to those people, as they may be able to help with our inquiry."
