A man has appeared in court charged with the 1998 murder of Surjit Singh Chhokar in Overtown, North Lanarkshire.

Ronnie Coulter, 46, from Wishaw, made no plea or declaration during a private hearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Thursday and was released on bail.

Last month, judges gave prosecutors permission to retry Mr Coulter over the fatal stabbing of Mr Chhokar, 32.

They ruled that two other men, Andrew Coulter, 33, and David Montgomery, 37, could not face trial for a second time.

All three men were previously cleared of murdering Mr Chhokar in 1998.
