Man assaulted for trying to help woman under attack

Police are attempting to trace two men who attacked a man after he tried to help a woman who was being assaulted.

The victim was attacked outside Smiths Hotel in David Donnelly Place, Kirkintilloch, at about 02:00 on Saturday.

The 51-year-old victim was treated for serious facial injuries at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and later released.

The woman ran off in the company of the two men, one of whom had been attacking her when the victim intervened.

Both suspects were described as white, aged between 25 and 30 years old.

One had dark hair and was wearing a white shirt and dark trousers, while the other was wearing a dark suit jacket and trousers.

'Sustained attack'

The female who was involved in the incident was described as being white, tall, of thin build and with long brown hair. She was wearing a cream fur body warmer.

Det Con Alyson Paton, of Police Scotland, said: "This was an extremely violent and sustained attack on a man who was only trying to assist a woman who was being assaulted.

"We know that there were a number of people nearby who either witnessed this incident or tried to intervene.

"I urge any of these people who haven't already spoken to police to contact police immediately."
