Police want to trace a woman and a man who were spotted on CCTV near the scene of a shooting incident in Greenock.

Officers were called to reports that a firearm had been discharged at a Vauxhall Insignia car in the town's Poplar Street at about 12:45 on Sunday.

The incident is being treated as attempted murder.

The car, carrying two people, left the scene before police arrived, as did the suspect, who was on foot.

He was described as white, 5ft 4in tall and of slim build. He was wearing dark-coloured clothing and had a scarf over his face.

Detectives have been studying CCTV images and are re-appealing for witnesses.

Car descriptions

The woman they want to speak to was wearing a black jacket with the fur-trimmed hood up and was walking with a young girl wearing a white or cream padded jacket.

Officers would also like to speak to a man who was seen carrying a blue plastic bag.

He was wearing a black hooded jacket and black hat.

The inquiry team is also keen to trace the occupants of a black three-door Vauxhall Astra and a light blue Citroen Picasso.

Det Ch Insp Catriona Henderson said: "A black Audi Q7 was seen in the local area around the time the shooting took place, and I would like to hear from anyone with saw this vehicle, or has any information relating to this car or occupants to contact police.

"I would like to get the message across to people that they shouldn't assume what we know, but should come forward no matter how insignificant the information they hold may seem."

Additional officers are patrolling the area to provide reassurance to the public.
