Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in the early hours of the morning in Edinburgh.

The incident occurred at about 01:30, on Kirk Street in the Leith area.

A 38-year-old man was standing outside his home, when he was approached by a man, who assaulted him.

The victim fell to the ground and sustained head and facial injuries. He attended the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Police are now looking to trace the suspect - a white man of young appearance, who was wearing a grey item of clothing at the time of the attack.

Det Con John Dunn said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a member of the public, who exchanged no words with his attacker.

"We are eager to trace this suspect. Anyone who saw anything suspicious, or has any information they wish to provide, is urged to contact police immediately."
