An investigation is under way after a 38-year-old woman was raped in Glasgow.

Police said the victim entered a black transit van voluntarily, which then parked in Firpark Street, near Firpark Terrace, behind the city's Necropolis.

A man then subjected her to a serious sexual assault within the van before letting her out and driving off.

The incident happened between 16:30 and 16:45 on Wednesday. Police want to trace a man and woman who may have walked past the van during the attack.

The suspect is described as white, about 5ft 10in tall, in his early-to-mid-30s, of medium/muscular build and with short dark spiky hair.

'Traumatic ordeal'

At the time of the attack he was wearing a black t-shirt and black jogging bottoms.

Det Insp Graeme McLachlan said: "This was a very traumatic ordeal for the woman to endure and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident.

"I'd like to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity around this time and saw the van parked in Firpark Street.

"I'm particularly keen to speak to a man and woman who we believe walked past the vehicle as the assault took place."

Det Insp McLachlan said the woman was wearing a beige coloured raincoat and was pulling a suitcase.

The man was wearing a dark suit and carrying a briefcase.

He added: "It is vital that this man and woman contact police urgently."
