A teenager has been seriously injured following a street attack in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire.

The 15-year-old boy was walking with a friend in the town's Laurel Drive when he was attacked by a group of up to six youths at about 16:30 on Monday.

He suffered a serious facial injury. The motive for the attack, which was reported the next day, is not known.

The group of youths were male, white, aged between 15 and 17 years old and spoke with local accents.

Det Insp Kenny Dalrymple, of Police Scotland, said: "This cowardly, unprovoked attack happened near to a local Spar shop and we know the young boy and his friend had been in the shop before he was assaulted.

"I am appealing to local people to contact us, perhaps you too had been in the shop, did you notice a group of youths hanging about? Do you know who they are?

"It's clear these youths were intent on causing trouble and unfortunately a young 15 year-old boy was their target."
