Delta Air Lines has announced that it will run a non-stop flight from Glasgow to New York-JFK from next year.

The US-based airline said the service would run daily throughout the summer and begin on 26 May 2017.

From JFK, same-day onward connections are available to 60 other destinations throughout the United States.

Delta, which already operates a service from Edinburgh, said the new route would be operated in conjunction with partners Virgin Atlantic Airways.

Delta's senior vice president trans-Atlantic, Dwight James, said: "With this service, Delta will operate from four airports in Scotland and England offering our customers more choice of local services to reach their chosen US destination, as well as offering tourism and business opportunities for Scotland."

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, added: "Routes such as this enable Scotland to maintain and increase its global competitiveness.

"Not only will it play a major role in supporting our growing tourism industry, it will provide Scottish businesses with yet another direct link to what is the world's largest economy."
