Two men killed after car and lorry collide on A723 in South Lanarkshire

Two 23-year-old men have died after the car they were travelling in collided with a lorry in South Lanarkshire.

Their northbound Volkswagen Golf collided with the southbound Scania lorry on the A723, at Muirhall Farm, near Strathaven, at 14:55 on Wednesday.

The driver of the car and his passenger died at the scene. The 26-year-old lorry driver was not injured.

The road was closed overnight while police carried out investigations. It re-opened at about 05:20.

Sgt Craig McDonald, of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Motherwell, has appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to get in touch.

Gordon Mackay, head of South Lanarkshire Council's Roads and Transportation Services, said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the people killed in this tragic accident.

"The council will continue to assist Police Scotland in any way we can as they complete their investigations."
