A suspicious fire has damaged several commercial properties in a North Lanarkshire town.

Police said they were alerted to a fire in a disused building in Main Street, Coatbridge, at about 23:30 on Sunday.

The blaze spread to other businesses, damaging at least seven of them in Main Street and Academy Street.

An initial investigation found the fire was set deliberately. Officers have appealed to anyone with information to contact them.

No-one was inside any of the damaged properties at the time of the fire.

Detectives are examining CCTV and carrying out door-to-door inquiries.

Det Sgt Peter Lennon said: "Several buildings have been badly damaged resulting in businesses not being able to open up and operate normally.

"I am appealing for anyone with any information, no matter how small it may seem, to get in touch with us and pass it on."
