An engineering train has derailed in South Lanarkshire.

The train came off tracks between Carluke and Carstairs at about 09:30 on Sunday morning.

Trains on the West Coast mainline have been disrupted, with buses running between Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle.

Locally, the line to Lanark is blocked and rail services between Glasgow Central and Lanark will terminate at Wishaw and re-start from Shieldmuir.

ScotRail said disruption is now expected to last until at least 18:00.

The company posted pictures of the train and efforts to clear the incident on social media.

It is believed once the train is removed, the tracks will then be assessed for damage by engineers before the line will fully re-open.

Passengers on affected routes have been told their tickets may be accepted on alternative services and also for travel on Monday.
