Secret gift to fossil hero Hugh Miller's museum

A museum dedicated to 19th Century geologist and fossil collector Hugh Miller has received an anonymous donation of £600,000.

The National Trust for Scotland-owned cottage in Cromarty was Miller's birthplace and family home.

The donation is one of the largest the trust has received.

Mr Miller's study of fossils and rocks around Cromarty has been credited with contributing to a greater understanding of the history of the Earth.

Modern geologists have described him as a hero.
