A painting created at the former home of Ring of Bright Water author and naturalist Gavin Maxwell has sold for £174,000 at auction.

Oxford-born artist Winifred Nicholson's Sea Treasures depicts a view from a window of Maxwell's property in Sandaig in the Highlands.

Bonhams in London auctioned the painting. It had been expected to sell for £50,000 and £70,000.

Maxwell's 1960 book told of his efforts to raise an otter rescued from Iraq.

The naturalist died of cancer in 1969.
