Gates on the original approach to a country house requisitioned by Bonnie Prince Charlie as his headquarters are to be replaced.

Culloden House was the prince's base ahead of the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The property is now a hotel.

Highland Council said the new gates on either end of Culloden Avenue would be "more in keeping" with the historic building and its setting.

They will form part of a wider-phased project to improve the avenue.

Smithton and Culloden Community Council have been consulted on the plan.

The avenue is owned by Highland Council.

In 2009, a recreation of a Jacobite night march of 15 April 1746 started from Culloden House.

Prince Charlie's forces were defeated in battle the following day.
