A dog sled racer from Aviemore has beaten some of the world's best mushers during an elite race in Canada.

John Stewart, 25, finished runner-up in the 150-mile Canadian Championship Dog Derby near Yellowknife and won the 'Rookie of the Race' award.

It was the first time a Scot had competed in the gruelling three-day event, and no European had ever made it into the top three before.

John's parents run the Cairngorm Sled Dog Centre near Glenmore.

He has been training in Canada with his dog team since November.
