New Inverness Tesco gets 625 applications for 117 jobs

A supermarket chain has said it received 625 applications for 117 jobs at its new store in Inverness.

Tesco said it interviewed 498 people and had given seven jobs to local residents who had been unemployed for six months or longer.

The 140 staff at the new store on the city's Dores Road include 23 employees relocated from other Tesco sites.

Inverness has seen job losses in recent months, including the closure of a Focus DIY store.

Hundreds of local authority posts have also been under threat.

Last month, Highland Council delayed a move to end 344 classroom assistant posts and replace them with a lower number of learning support jobs.

It said the action was not now likely to happen at least until August 2012.

The Tesco supermarket in Inverness is to open on 18 July.
