Fire attack bid at Alness hotel where guests slept

Police investigating serious damage at a Highland hotel have revealed that attempts were made to set fire to the building while guests slept.

The attack on the Station Hotel, High Street, Alness, took place at about 03:00 on Sunday.

Police have appealed for information about anyone seen acting suspiciously.

They are also keen to hear about anyone seen discarding items of clothing between the town centre and the Kirkside, Coulhill and Firhill areas.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: "It appears that attempts were made to set fire to the hotel, which would have had very serious consequences as there were a number of people asleep in the hotel at the time."

Police said a "considerable amount of damage" had been caused to the hotel.

It is understood that windows and doors were smashed, both inside and outside the building.
