Wick High School's Kevin Costello died in Thurso crash

Tributes have been paid to a teacher who died in a crash on the A9 near Thurso on Tuesday night.

Dr Kevin Costello, from Scrabster, was a passenger in a car involved in a collision with a campervan at Weydale shortly after 19:00.

The 47-year-old was principal teacher of science at Wick High School.

Rector Thomas McIntyre said the school had been stunned by the death of a highly respected and inspirational teacher.

Liz Wheeler, a science teacher at Wick High School, was injured in the accident.

Mr McIntyre said: "The whole school community is stunned by the news.

"Kevin was highly respected and popular among colleagues and friends.

"He was an inspirational teacher who was highly thought of by his pupils. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and sympathy are with Kevin's family."

The rector said the thoughts of staff and pupils were also with Ms Wheeler.

'Deeply saddened'

Highland Council's education committee chairman, Bill Fernie, also paid tribute to Dr Costello.

He said: "We are shocked and deeply saddened by this tragic loss.

"Our sincere condolences are with Dr Costello's family and friends as well as his colleagues and all the pupils at Wick High School."

Northern Constabulary has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
