Highlands and Islands university to seek extra funds
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) is to seek about £3m a year of additional funding from the Scottish government.
UHI principal James Fraser said the institution needed more money because of an increasing demand for expertise in renewable energy.
He said current funding was already lagging behind the student roll.
Formerly a higher education institute, UHI was confirmed as Scotland's newest university in February this year.
Renewable energy is a key area of research for the university.
UHI - which is made up of a network of 13 colleges and research centres in the Highlands, Western and Northern Isles, Moray, Argyll and Perthshire - covers an area twice the size of Wales.
