Controversial Sunday ferry service for Harris to start

Caledonian MacBrayne has confirmed it will go ahead with a new Sunday ferry service to and from Harris.

The scheduled service will start on 23 October between Tarbert on Harris, Uig on Skye and Lochmaddy on North Uist and will continue throughout the winter.

Provision of the ferry service has been opposed by the Tarbert branch of the Lord's Day Observance Society.

Caledonian MacBrayne said its decision followed consultation with the local community.

At the moment, Tarbert does not have a ferry service on the Sabbath, although a boat goes empty from the island to North Uist to provide a Sunday service to Skye from Lochmaddy.

Caledonian MacBrayne said: "In economic terms, the use of the repositioning run is attractive because there are no additional costs in providing the service and it creates an opportunity to generate revenue to offset the existing costs."
