The street pastors scheme is to be expanded to 16 new places in Scotland.

Volunteers already operate in 13 locations, including Aberdeen and Inverness, and try to ease late night tensions in town and city centres.

Some patrols have handed out flip-flops to women struggling on high heels on their ways home after Friday and Saturday nights out.

The new sites include Banchory, Dundee, Glenrothes, Kirkwall, Nairn, St Andrews, Tain, Oban and Wick.

Perth-based charity The Ascension Trust Scotland is expanding the project backed with funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland.
