Human remains found near to shore

Human remains have been found on a beach in the Highlands in an area where an angler went missing.

A member of the public made the discovery on the shore by Stoer Bay near Lochinver.

Northern Constabulary said that inquiries were under way to identify the remains.

Stephen Matheson, 55, disappeared in the area in September while staying with relatives in the Clachtoll area of Lochinver.

Mr Matheson, from the Ross-on-Wye area of Herefordshire, was last seen on 25 September.

His car was found parked by Stoer Lodge by Lochinver, an area he regularly visited to fish off the rocks nearby.

Coastguard and police launched a major search but did not find him.

Police said that his family have been told of the discovery of the remains.

The force said it was too early to say whether the death was suspicious.
