Western Isles Council to make £3.5m cuts

Western Isles Council has said that cuts it will have to make in the next financial year could lead to compulsory redundancies among its workforce.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is preparing a draft budget setting out savings of £3.5m.

Leader Angus Campbell said the situation could have been worse, but added that finding the savings still posed a significant challenge.

He previously warned redundancies could accelerate depopulation of the isles.

Mr Campbell said in October that the affected staff may then move away from the islands.

Depopulation has been a long-running issue for the Western Isles.
