Man arrested after police pursuit on Western Isles

A 20-year-old man has been arrested after an allegedly stolen car being pursued by police left the road and crashed into a tree on Lewis.

Police spotted the vehicle after a car answering its description was reported stolen in the Bragar area on Thursday.

Officers said the 20-year-old driver had been arrested in connection with allegations of drink-driving, car theft and road traffic offences.

He is expected to appear at Stornoway Sheriff Court later.

Three 17-year-old girls and another 20-year-old man were also in the car. Police said that all four were uninjured.

Also on Thursday, a 51-year-old man was arrested in connection with allegations of drink-driving and road traffic offences in Caithness.

Police said the vehicle he was driving collided with a car being driven by an 81-year-old man at the roundabout outside Mackay's Hotel in Wick.

The 51-year-old was arrested at his home in Keiss and is expected to appear at Wick Sherriff Court later.
