Fisherman found dead off Lewis after search

A man has died after being lost overboard from a fishing vessel off the Isle of Lewis.

The alarm was raised by the French boat Jean Claude Coulon II at 02:06 on Sunday, from a position 50 miles north west off the Butt of Lewis.

The coastguard rescue helicopter in Stornoway was scrambled and a search located the man.

Although he was pulled from the water, he was found to have died before he could be reached.

Carol Collins, watch manager at Stornoway coastguard, said: "The fisherman was recovered by the crew of the fishing vessel.

"The vessel then made its way to Stornoway Harbour where it was met by the appropriate authorities.

"The casualty has been pronounced deceased by a medic on scene."
